About Us (...well, About "Me")
I'm James Sims, the owner, operator and only employee of Orange Owl Florist. For the past several years, I have been designing and arranging flowers for weddings and special occasions. I do all the work myself, and work out of my home, which means that I have very little overhead, and I can pass those savings along to you!
I started Orange Owl Florist based on a minor catastrophe. My sister was getting married, and had decided she wanted to save money and order her flowers wholesale. Her venue coordinator had offered to help with the arrangements, but bailed at the last minute. Luckily, my oldest sister had worked at a flower shop for a summer and knew the basics, and I got drafted to help. In a matter of hours, we managed to put together about 12 bouquets (yes, my sister had that many bridesmaids), boutonnieres for the groomsmen, altar arrangements, pew decorations, and even a wreath for the flower girl's hair. The flowers were beautiful and the catastrophe was averted, and I realized that I had a knack for flowers.
A year or so later, a friend was trying to plan her wedding on a budget, and I offered to help with the flowers. I ended up having to get a business license so that we could buy the flowers wholesale, but I didn't really have any intention of doing anything with it. At the wedding, one of her friends was impressed by the flowers and asked who did them, because she was planning a baby shower- so I offered to do those flowers as well. That baby shower led to another wedding, and I decided that I actually had a legitimate business on my hands. I rely primarily on word of mouth advertising, so if you like what you see, share it with a friend!
And by the way, this isn't my day job... By day, I'm working on my PhD in Chemical Engineering at Tufts University, but I find that arranging flowers and working on weddings and other events is a really fun creative outlet. Of course I have other interests as well, I play the piano, ski, perform in musicals, spend time with my dog (Harrison, a black lab), and have recently been bitten by the travel bug.
